Mississippi river cruise today is quite popular as many people see it a way of experiencing the river culture. Cruising the 2,320-mile long river will allow you get a different glimpse of the United States.

This is an ideal way to learn more about American history. However, a Mississippi river cruise is not just restricted to learning about American history; you also can enjoy local music and regional cuisine.

The cruise is usually hosted on a paddle-wheeled steam boat, which will usually have a Victorian décor. The staff on the boats are extremely friendly, and customer service is rather good.

There are many cruise companies offering the Mississippi river cruise and each package is of different duration. There are cruise package ranging from 3 days to 12 days, depending on how much time you want to spend enjoying yourself. You can even select an hour long cruise if you do not want to spend too much time on a boat.

The pace of the cruise is not fast like ocean cruise vessels. Usually the boats travel at six miles per hour giving passengers enough time to absorb the surrounding beauty.

Many cruise companies have special cruises for special days like Valentine’s Day cruise or Christmas cruise. These cruises are more expensive than normal cruises and the passengers are treated to exciting display of fireworks during the course of the cruise.

The length of the cruise will depend on the number of ports of call. Since the entire river system has over 50 rivers and tributaries, you can be sure that you will have ample opportunity to explore and learn more about the American Midwest.

Although you can go for a Mississippi river cruise any time of the year, in winter the northern routes are not available. If you are sensitive to heat and humidity, you should avoid going for the cruise in summer when the river basin is warm. Make sure you book your cruise well in advance as each boat takes less than 500 passengers per trip. In order to save money, you avoid add-ons and eat on land rather than the boat.

The Mississippi River is one of the most popular rivers in the United States. The river’s length is 3,770 kilometers making it the 2nd longest river in the country. The river begins at the Lake Itasca part of Minnesota up to the Gulf of Mexico. The term Mississippi is taken from the word Ojibwe which literally means Great River.

A change in the route of the Mississippi River was caused by earthquakes next to the fault zone of New Madrid which sits at the center of St. Louis and Memphis. The three major earthquakes which happened during the year 1811 and 1812 have caused the temporary reversal of the river. The Reverie settlement located in Tennessee was stopped from the Tipton County and was diverted to the area of the Arkansas River. The earthquakes have also led to the formation of the Reelfoot Lake.

Later on, the lower part of the Mississippi River have naturally diverted to its ending path to the entrance of the Gulf of Mexico. This phenomenon occurred because river’s channel was blocked with deposits of mud. The water level rose as a result.

In addition, Mississippi River is combined with other rivers which serve as tributaries. These rivers include St. Croix River, Minnesota River, Wisconsin River, Iowa River, Skunk River, Des Moines River and the Illinois River. The river also has sub-tributaries, namely the Platte River and the Tennessee River.

The Mississippi River is a historical site and one of America’s most valued parts of its natural possessions. It is also a sanctuary to over 320 types of birds. The river is also an integral part of the surrounding communities contributing to the economy and environmental aspect. It has been an inspiration in the creation of a cultural heritage.

The Mississippi River has also been a subject in many cultural, music and arts. Novels have been written, songs have been composed pertaining to the wonders of this river.

The river is presently one of the tourist attractions in the U.S. It is a famous place for water skiing. Historically, the sport of water skiing was discovered in this river by Ralph Samuelson during 1922. It was also in Mississippi River that the first ski jump was held in 1925.

The Mississippi River boasts of its seven National Parks which attract a lot of local and foreign tourists every year. The Mississippi National River and Recreation Area was organized in order to protect and preserve the environment of the river.

There are other organizations established who join forces in protecting the river. All joining this worthy cause are Jean Lafitte National Historical Park and Preserve, Jefferson National Expansion Memorial, Effigy Mounds National Monument, Natchez National Historical Park, Vicksburg National Military Park and the New Orleans Jazz National Historical Park.

There are a lot of cruise lines which offers great travel packages for tourists to have an opportunity to witness the magnificent wonder of this historical river. Tourist can enjoy visiting the ten states, all parts of the Mississippi River. Hotels and restaurants are abundant to cater to the needs of the travelers.

The Mississippi River is not just an ordinary river. It is a historical heritage and serves a vital role in the existence of the habitats in its surrounding lands.

A Mississippi cruise can be of many kinds, depending upon the chic, the size of the vessel, the number of passengers, the theme, the cost and the length. The most common distinctions are the deluxe cruises vs. budget cruises, nature vs. city cruises, steamboat vs. modern boat, and the kind (honeymoon, historical, senior, singles, etc).

Mississippi has major towns which include Batesville, Greenville and Marks, Yazoo city (also known as the Gateway to the Delta), Clarkdale and Cleveland, among others. This is a great site for a romantic getaway for lovers, and also for picnickers and holiday makers in general. The area is associated with the origins of numerous famous songs and music which include cool jazz, rock and roll and of course blues which were borne out of life struggles that characterised the early black sharecroppers and peasant farmers.

Mississippi delata festivals include a world catfish fishing festival, a delta air balloon festival, an October festival, Mississippi delta blues and heritage festival and the spring time sun, which is as yellow as a daffodil floating on a blue sea. Wonderful things to behold by passengers on typical Mississippi delta cruises.

Cheap cruises are available on the Mississippi Delta. A lot can be saved on the original brochure fee. Cheap cruises are often packaged by major cruise lines and can become very special occasions for festivals for families, lovers, celebrities, first timers, children and so on.

On a Mississippi Delata cruise, there will be absolutely no dull moment for you thanks to the local music, nice cuisine with homemade meals from internationally recognised chefs for those who love food and to entertainment from gaming venues that meet world class standards.

Many of the major cruise lines operating cheap cruises are open to passengers who want to book advance reservations for a ride in order to be able to secure a place. On Mississippi delta cruises passengers on board are often treated with well narrated introductions giving a historical view of the waterfronts, music on the return cruise and catered brunch, lunch, dinner and dance.
